A Year Ago Today…
The Story of Jenna Liston and James Rockett
A year and one week ago I was a lost soul surfing the internet channels of the website you may have heard of called Chatroulette.
Chatroulette is a website which pairs random strangers for webcam-based conversations. Visitors to the website randomly begin an online stranger chat (video and text) with another visitor. At any point, either user may leave the current chat by initiating another random connection
Alone in my 540 sq foot apartment in Uptown Dallas, I was searching the ends of the world for what I then would call research for my graduate class. Researching, documenting, and videotaping, I spent 56 hours asking hundreds of people deep questions about the meaning of life, what brought them to the website and what they were searching for on it. I “nexted” what seemed like millions of guys jacking off on their web cam. But I also had the opportunity to make them think about what they were doing by holding up signs that read “This could be your daughter watching this”, just to make them realize that even though this was anonymous, it still has effects on other human beings, and the site was crawling with about 5% kids at the time.
While I did encounter several perverts, and I will never know if the time I spent made any difference in those people’s lives, I know I truly made an impact on some.
I met a band in Denver that I talked to for about an hour about life. I met a couple in England that still follow me on Twitter. I met a friend from Duluth, Minnesota and we still encourage together to this day on pursuing our passions of psychology, sociology, and entrepreneurial endeavors. (You can find his website and amazing writings on some taboo subjects at http://www.luvstudy.com/drus-blog.html).
Most notably, I interviewed Jessica Alba for about 10 minutes! Click here to read the interview with pictures. As you can tell I acted like an overly excited teenage girl, but she was so nice! Having Jessica Alba tell me ”you are very pretty” and “you may be the next big reporter”, were HUGE inspirations for me to pursue a career in radio/ustream/online journalism.
So there I was, high on life like you could not imagine. How could anyone ever be lonely when there is a world of millions of people to talk to and interview at any time about ANYTHING. That is if you are an attractive female living in a nice place, lol. Fascinated with technology, emergent communications, and the powerful effects of entertainment and media, there was something completely new and eye opening about this new website that threw complete strangers into the deepest conversation of their life in a matter of minutes. Cut through the bullshit, you will never see this person again! Make them realize their life can be beautiful outside this world of their laptop. I understood the draw, but I saw how lonely most all of these people were. Searching for meaning, a conversation… A CONNECTION.
During what I now call my “Chatroulette Binge”, I met a funny character named Todd Johnston. He was skinny, had glasses, but typed some hilarious and intriguing comments that caught even myself off guard! Who was this kid? I AM the social psychologist of the internet! After laughing hysterically at a few comments, I told him he should be a comedian. After all, my calling is to help people find and pursue their passions! Turns out he was indeed working on his stand up career, and just did a show a few nights ago at a place called The Addison Improv!
Now for those of you that don’t know, I LOVE the improv, and it just so happens that THE ADDISON Improv is about 15 minutes from where I live! Who I presumed to be his roomate, another young gent walks in the room and sits on the couch to talk. This guy was much bigger than Todd. I could he was tall, and had a head of poofy brown hair that was too cute too boot.
Before I knew it, I had been talking to these guys for hours. Only to find out that the poofy haired one’s name is Rockett, and it is his apartment they are at in Allen, TX. About a 40 minute drive from my apartment. After friending each other on facebook, I spent my next day chatting with more chatrouletters and stalking these guys facebook profiles. They were amazing! They were interested in all the same geeky things I was, and Rockett’s website portfolio was so intriguing to me! Not that my friends are superficial, but I was definitely going down a different path then the rest of the people I was surrounded by in my current situation. These guys inspired me, encouraged me, and most of all, I felt really GOT me.
The next night I invited them up to my apartment. Now if your kid/friend/family member starts inviting strangers from Chatroulette over to their apartment at night, I would definitely be scared and call an intervention. As I late found out my friends were actually getting ready to organize. But when they came up, everything clicked! We talked about tv show ideas, comedy sketches, emergent technology, sociology and psychology, music, movies… just typing about our first meeting makes me all giddy inside.
I was on the right track. It came when I was pursuing my own passions and helping others find and pursue their own. That thing that came, was an intense passion and cosmic connection with the man that changed my life, James Leon Rockett Jr.
From the moment we met, we became inseparable. There was so much to talk about, so many things to laugh about together, so many things to learn about and from eachother.
A week of this intense connection went on, and a year ago today is when we made it all official.
Happy One Year Anniversary to the Love of my life.
