Jenna and James Chatroulette

I logged into my wordpress account I created for The Dallas Dish back in February of 2010 and found an unpublished blog from February 21 that eerily foretells my meeting Rockett 2 months later on Chatroulette.
The blog was a long rant that went off on too many tangents (the reason it never got posted).. but the end of it was brilliant, because I was digging deep inside and at the time was spending a lot of time alone evaluating my life in my Uptown studio apartment. I believe I was ready to meet Rockett because I had put my wants and desires out in the universe by expressing myself through writing.  The blog was about one of my all time favorite shows, the OC.  Laugh all you want, but it was an obsession in college, and during this no cable time in my life at my new apartment, I watched a lot of OC DVDs.  I loved watching Summer’s character arch, from bratty, spoiled, superficial high school girl, to a well rounded, grounded, almost hippie like student at Brown.  I connected with her, and at the time I wrote this blog, I was examining the type of people I had dated, why they hadn’t worked out, and what I ultimately wanted and needed in a mate.
Seth Cohen had always been my ideal guy on TV, and even the guy I even cut out of a magazine put on a collage, along with other reaffirming words of what things I wanted and wouldn’t settle for anything less than.  It didn’t matter if he came in package that looked like Seth (which ironically Rockett looks very similar too), but it was about the personality, the dedication to his woman, the honesty and the fun loving spirit.  Anyways… here is the important part of that blog I wanted to share and post…

I have never dated Seth Cohen and maybe it is time to find out what are the characteristics of someone I would want to be in my life forever based on who I am now, as compare to my old preconceived notions of what I was to want.  I want a guy that is creative.  That is open-minded and energetic about life and so passionate about what they do.  Someone that can feed off my ideas, and loves to brainstorm with me.  That understands that I am quirky, and I get a lot of ideas and want to do a lot of things, but loves me for that.  Someone that fosters a love that inspires me to  be the person I really am inside.  Yet, balances me and keeps me down to earth.   Seth ultimately brought the best out of Summer.  Even their names go together!  This is what I want out of my next relationship, if that is in the cards for me.  Till then, pursuing life full force is what I will do!
Bottom Line:  Look for some Seth Cohen qualities in guys.

Advice to those who haven’t found their perfect mate:  Know thyself.  Know what you need.  Quit dating the same type of douche bag guy over and over.
Rockett is all the things I said I wanted and needed in order for me to settle down again.  I was perfectly happy being single, because I was pursuing the things I was passionate about… and wa lah… my knight and shining armor came right through the screen of chatroulette.  Lucky lucky girl I am :)

We Met on Chatroulette

No, we didn’t just meet online. We didn’t think each other was cute from a picture online, start cyber flirting, a poke here, a poke there, meet and hit it off.  Not that there is anything wrong with that! (I do however think someone needs to write a book for online dating btw, but that is an add sidetrack).  But the way we met was completely different, complete chance of the roll on Chatroulette.

But I guess my numbers good, since I was on the site for 52 hours straight… completely addicted to connecting with people from around the world, and performing social experiments to make pervs feel different about their life decisions. People thought I was crazy for not sleeping, but I was so energized by this new social wave and what people do when they are completely alone and anonymous. Anyways… I pulled some quotes from Wikipedia about Chatroulette, to show the statistics of our meeting.  I must be the only weird enough girl to be on that site in the awe of the rawness of humanity.

Chatroulette is a website that pairs random strangers from around the world together for webcam-based conversations. Visitors to the website randomly begin an online chat (video, audio and text) with another visitor. At any point, either user may leave the current chat by initiating another random connection.

According to one informal study published in March 2010, nearly half of all Chatroulette spins connected a user with someone in the USA, while the next most likely country was France with 15%. On average in sessions showing a single person, 89% of these were male and 11% were female. 8% of spins showed multiple people behind the camera. 1 in 3 females appeared as such a group. That number is 1 in 12 for males. A user was more likely to encounter a webcam featuring no person at all than one featuring a sole female. 1 in 8 spins yielded possibly objectionable content. A user was twice as likely to encounter a sign requesting female nudity than to encounter actual female nudity.

A participant whose chat partner clicks the Chatroulette Next button to move on to a new partner is described as being “nexted”.

Celebrities claiming to have used Chatroulette include Kelly OsbourneDaniel ToshJoel MaddenNicole RichieKevin SmithParis HiltonAshton Kutcher, Ian Hecox and Justin Bieber.

I met and interviewed Jessica Alba on the site.  I have all the files and screen shots saved somewhere.

My advice to you is not to go slaving away meeting creepos on chatroulette to find your mate.  But to find what you are truly passionate about and pursue it, and for me it is talking to people, finding out their life stories, and connecting with other souls to learn more about myself and the world I live in.

I believe you find your perfect mate when you are being 100% you. Not caring about the little things, but pursing a higher mission.  Having goals and ideas, and are full of joy, love and laughter.  When you already have great stories to share and have experienced heart break at its fullest.  When you look at guys as potential friends instead lovers, and ask questions out of the genuineness of wanting to know someone else’s story. I think it is then when your energy fields align and are their highest potential to pull you and your soul mate together.

Thanks 17 year old kid in Russia for pursing your dreams of making a revolutionary website of bringing people together around the world, or right in the same city.

Jenna and James: We Met on Chatroulette

A Year Ago Today…

The Story of Jenna Liston and James Rockett

A year and one week ago I was a lost soul surfing the internet channels of the website you may have heard of called Chatroulette.

Chatroulette is a website which pairs random strangers for webcam-based conversations. Visitors to the website randomly begin an online stranger chat (video and text) with another visitor. At any point, either user may leave the current chat by initiating another random connection

Alone in my 540 sq foot apartment in Uptown Dallas, I was searching the ends of the world for what I then would call research for my graduate class. Researching, documenting, and videotaping, I spent 56 hours asking hundreds of people deep questions about the meaning of life, what brought them to the website and what they were searching for on it.  I “nexted” what seemed like millions of guys jacking off on their web cam.  But I also had the opportunity to make them think about what they were doing by holding up signs that read “This could be your daughter watching this”, just to make them realize that even though this was anonymous, it still has effects on other human beings, and the site was crawling with about 5% kids at the time.

While I did encounter several perverts, and I will never know if the time I spent made any difference in those people’s lives, I know I truly made an impact on some.

I met a band in Denver that I talked to for about an hour about life.  I met a couple in England that still follow me on Twitter.  I met a friend from Duluth, Minnesota and we still encourage together to this day on pursuing our passions of psychology, sociology, and entrepreneurial endeavors.  (You can find his website and amazing writings on some taboo subjects at http://www.luvstudy.com/drus-blog.html).

Most notably, I interviewed Jessica Alba for about 10 minutes! Click here to read the interview with pictures.  As you can tell I acted like an overly excited teenage girl, but she was so nice!  Having Jessica Alba tell me  ”you are very pretty” and “you may be the next big reporter”, were HUGE inspirations for me to pursue a career in radio/ustream/online journalism.

So there I was, high on life like you could not imagine.  How could anyone ever be lonely when there is a world of millions of people to talk to and interview at any time about ANYTHING. That is if you are an attractive female living in a nice place, lol.  Fascinated with technology, emergent communications, and the powerful effects of entertainment and media, there was something completely new and eye opening about this new website that threw complete strangers into the deepest conversation of their life in a matter of minutes.  Cut through the bullshit, you will never see this person again!  Make them realize their life can be beautiful outside this world of their laptop.  I understood the draw, but I saw how lonely most all of these people were.  Searching for meaning, a conversation… A CONNECTION.

During what I now call my “Chatroulette Binge”, I met a funny character named Todd Johnston.  He was skinny, had glasses, but typed some hilarious and intriguing comments that caught even myself off guard!  Who was this kid?  I AM the social psychologist of the internet!  After laughing hysterically at a few comments, I told him he should be a comedian.  After all, my calling is to help people find and pursue their passions!  Turns out he was indeed working on his stand up career, and just did a show a few nights ago at a place called The Addison Improv!

Now for those of you that don’t know, I LOVE the improv, and it just so happens that THE ADDISON Improv is about 15 minutes from where I live!  Who I presumed to be his roomate, another young gent walks in the room and sits on the couch to talk.  This guy was much bigger than Todd.  I could he was tall, and had a head of poofy brown hair that was too cute too boot.

Before I knew it, I had been talking to these guys for hours.  Only to find out that the poofy haired one’s name is Rockett, and it is his apartment they are at in Allen, TX.  About a 40 minute drive from my apartment.  After friending each other on facebook, I spent my next day chatting with more chatrouletters and stalking these guys facebook profiles.  They were amazing!  They were interested in all the same geeky things I was, and Rockett’s website portfolio was so intriguing to me!  Not that my friends are superficial, but I was definitely going down a different path then the rest of the people I was surrounded by in my current situation.  These guys inspired me, encouraged me, and most of all, I felt really GOT me.

The next night I invited them up to my apartment.  Now if your kid/friend/family member starts inviting strangers from Chatroulette over to their apartment at night, I would definitely be scared and call an intervention.  As I late found out my friends were actually getting ready to organize.  But when they came up, everything clicked!  We talked about tv show ideas, comedy sketches, emergent technology, sociology and psychology, music, movies… just typing about our first meeting makes me all giddy inside.

I was on the right track.  It came when I was pursuing my own passions and helping others find and pursue their own.  That thing that came, was an intense passion and cosmic connection with the man that changed my life, James Leon Rockett Jr.

From the moment we met, we became inseparable.  There was so much to talk about, so many things to laugh about together, so many things to learn about and from eachother.

A week of this intense connection went on, and a year ago today is when we made it all official.

Happy One Year Anniversary to the Love of my life.
